This short film shows people and staff who use assistive technology talking about what it means to them. The technology ranges from simple products to apps and online resources and the film aims to increase awareness and appreciation of assistive technology products and the huge range of benefits they offer both residents and housing providers.

Audrey & David Joyce – Get Connected
Audrey and David Joyce have been married for 55 years and 13 months ago moved into their own new apartment in the ExtraCare Charitable Trust Village on Hagley Rd, Birmingham.
Audrey is a retired nurse who herself used to run a supported housing scheme in our region. David owned his own black cab company -he now lives with diabetes, Parkinsons Disease and dementia.
Suzanne Jones, the care manager, at Hagley Road suggested they could have a door alarm sensor http://tinyurl.com/oyuu5rc fitted and linked to the village call alarm system, so Audrey could occasionally pop out to the supermarket or visit friends, safe in the knowledge that if David left the flat alone one of the staff would be alerted and check on him.
For a one off cost of £100 this has given Audrey peace of mind and more freedom to live her own life.
By listening to Audrey telling her story about the police finding David in his pyjamas on the M6, you will discover why she rarely felt able to leave him on his own and also hear how this simple, device has taken away a lot of worry whilst maintaining David’s safety and dignity.

Charlotte Roper – Get Connected
23 year-old Charlotte Roper has used the Ashram, Moseley Care Leavers Service (for 16-21 year olds who have lived in children’s or foster homes – part of the Accord Housing group).
She was recently recognised by the Balsall Heath Forum Youth Awards attended by the Lord Mayor of Birmingham as well as various big names in cricket etc. The Accord group were celebrating inspiring young people such as Charlotte for all her volunteering efforts.
Charlotte talks about how she saved up and bought her own mobile phone, tablet computer and Smart TV and learned a whole range of new computer skills which she uses in her voluntary work such as producing newsletters, as well as keeping in touch with everyone by email etc. She has used online programmes for speech therapy and found that it has also helped with her dyslexia.
Olutayo Arikawe – Get Connected
Olutayo Arikawe is the Superintendent Pharmacist at a Healthy Living Pharmacy in Dudley. She works closely with Dudley Telecare providing pill dispensers to remind people to take their medication if they have become forgetful.
They also run a ‘free slippers’ initiative for people at risk of falling as part of a local falls prevention campaign.

Dorothy and Gordon Caine – Get Connected
Dorothy and Gordon Caine, married for 60 years, live in Lime Gardens, a Midland Heart Retirement Village in Cradley and their disabled daughter lives in the flat next door.
Dudley Council originally supplied them with a range of assistive technology including a pendant alarm, smoke and fall detector.
Dorothy had two strokes resulting in communication difficulties and also suffers from severe arthritis. Their assistive technology package in Lime Gardens provides comfort for Dorothy and peace of mind for Gordon. He is a keen supporter of his local amateur football team in Halesowen, and the service enables him to still attend home matches secure in the knowledge that he can contact his wife if for any reason he is delayed on the way home.
He thinks that the £13 a month cost is worth every penny!

The Lockable Cooker Valve – keeping people safe at home for longer and saving lives
Helping people to keep loved ones safe at home with a free lockable cooker valve;
The simple safety device is fitted to existing gas cooker pipework. When the valve is locked, the gas supply to the cooker is stopped. This eliminates the risk of the cooker being unintentionally turned on or left on, and gives peace of mind to the carer or relative that the cooker can’t be used when they leave the house or the room. The carer or relative can easily turn the valve on using the key when the cooker is required, enabling the vulnerable person to continue to use their gas cooker safely.
